Classroom Summary Term 2

In Language Arts, we are currently working on practicing reading and writing sight words from our home reading duotangs. We have been focusing on reading short stories with understanding and answering comprehension questions, discussing story events, details, characters and setting in different stories and making personal connections. Also, we have been focusing on retelling stories in sequence. In writing,  we have been focusing on creating simple sentences based on picture prompts and assigned topics related to specific themes. As well,  we have been practicing writing short stories with transition words such as first, next and last, and writing star sentences including "Who?" and "Who does what?"

In Math, we are currently focusing on adding and subtracting numbers to 10, using different math strategies such as fingers, pictures, snap cubes, a number line and counters. Students are working on adding with doubles and a variety of problem solving math questions. We have completed skip counting by 5's to 100, skip counting by 2's to 20 and skip counting by 10 to 100. We have also been working on representing and ordering numbers to 100, and focusing on the terms before, between and after.

In Social Studies, we have been focusing on describing things that we enjoy and that are special to us. Students have been working on the skills of cooperation, conflict resolution, decision making and problem solving. Also, we discussed ways of showing kindness in a few different projects. As well, we have been learning about our rights and responsibilities as a citizen in a variety of communities.

In Science, we have been learning about animals' needs and and their lives in winter. Students have been practicing their skills and knowledge in using inquiry to explain, interpret and predict about animals' migration, adaptation and hibernation. As well, students have been working on their Penguin research project. They have been gathering facts about penguins and writing stories about them.

Please continue reading levelled books with your child and practicing sight words. Also, enjoy the RAZ kids reading program.


Parent Tips

A family atmosphere prevails at our school with the education of your child being a shared responsibility.  We encourage your interest in what your child does each day and welcome your involvement in the classroom, school council and at home.

  1. Please remind your child to practice their home reading on a regular basis.

  2. Please have your child go on our digital leveled reading program, Raz Kids and share their reading with you.
